When I woke up in the hospital in Seattle, most of the staff I spoke with had the same question for me when they found out I was a missionary. They wanted to know what I did? So I would start to share my testimony with them or start talking about how Jesus loves them. They would stop me and say, ‘no, not that. I understand you’re a Christian missionary and you evangelize and talk with people about Jesus. What I want to know is what do you actually do, on a daily basis?’ So that’s what I would like to try to briefly explain here.
What does a missionary do?
I can’t speak for all missionaries but I can tell you what I did. For instance, when I was in Uganda last year I helped other ministries leaders and volunteers at the mission to get the ministries up and running again after the lockdown. I also tried to keep the compound running, making sure cars were working, lights were on, that we all had what we needed to do ministry…
Before serving in Uganda I was working towards serving in Norway. Part of this process included finding a sending agency. Simply put, this is usually a nonprofit organization that helps missionaries to serve. As I was looking for a sending agency I came across all kinds of openings at existing ministries around the world. There was one that stuck out to me, even made me chuckle a little. It was a kayak instructor in Central America. That means you go to share the love of Christ and you do it while showing people how to kayak. So if you love kayaking, that is something God can use. God is great isn’t he? He can use anything, even kayaking. This was not a good fit for me though, I am not a kayaker. Maybe it is for you? I don’t know. How has God equipped you?
What I do on a day to day basis is not the same as what other missionaries do on a day to day basis. Which is good I think. Because God has equipped us all differently so we can reach more people with the good news. Stepping out to work, in how God gifted you. That is how I serve as a missionary, and that is how other missionaries serve, doing the things God has gifted us with.
I hope this answers the question of what a missionary does on a daily basis. I talked about this a lot with those people in Seattle and was thinking if they had that question many others probably did too. Hopefully, those people have a better idea of what missionaries do and were able to see how God can use everyone. I hope this has helped you as well.
