Sharing with a friend who lives in El Paso about serving Spanish speakers {see Habla Español?}, I was interrupted with, “oh yes, remind me to tell you about Iceland.” Well, my brain kind of stopped and I thought, what? Iceland!? That’s weird. But I finish my story first and then say, Ok please tell me about Iceland now.
She proceeds to share how her family just returned from vacation there. They had a great time; beautiful country, friendly people, bit expensive, and they came across a lot of young Spaniards. If I thought God was calling me to serve Spanish speakers she thought there seemed to be a lot of them in Iceland.
Hispanic Iceland
I remembered the high unemployment rate in Spain over the last few years and wondered if Spaniards were migrating to find work? When I looked into it, yes, that seems to be what was happening. The number one destination was England, which made sense to me because it is close physically and there are jobs there. But they were also heading up to Scandinavia. Hence all the Spanish speakers she met in Iceland.
So I started to look closer at Iceland… and was wondering, has anyone else been to Iceland?
Here’s one of the fun things I came across: Iceland off the beaten path (this is a longer read so you’ll need at least 10 minutes).
